Carvana’s Best-Selling Cars of 2022: Part 2 | Carvana’s Annual Best Sellers

Last week, we covered five of our best-selling cars of 2022. Today we’re back for round two, filling out the rest of Carvana’s annual best sellers. Themes of affordability and reliability from part one make a reappearance, but the presence of two compact SUVs breaths some fresh air into a list dominated by sedans.

Chevy Equinox: Serviceable for Any Situation

The Chevy Equinox is the first SUV to break into Carvana’s annual best sellers, and it’s not hard to see why. While many would point toward the Honda CR-V or Mazda CX-5 as personal preferences — and those are great cars — the Equinox comes to market at a lower price point. In a year where used car prices skyrocketed in the first half and interest rates increased in the second, it’s no surprise many customers prized affordability.

The Equinox may not be the flashiest compact SUV out there, but its comfortable driving profile and fuel efficiency make it a great pick.

Why Should I Buy… a Chevy Equinox?

  • Fuel efficiency. In an area where many competitors struggle, the Equinox’s ability to get around 30 mpg highlights its use as a family car.
  • Great safety features. The 2020 Equinox received a five-star crash-test safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Lane-keeping assist, automated emergency braking, pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, and more make it a safe daily driver.
  • Spacious interiors. The Equinox gives passengers and drivers alike plenty of breathing room, and a trunk that can easily fit suitcases for the whole family. Combined with its safety features and fuel efficiency, it makes for a great road-tripper if you’re in the market.

Hyundai Elantra: Bringing Value & Efficiency to the Mix

Aaaand we’re back to sedan land. This time with Hyundai, an automaker that had yet to make our list. The automaker’s had quite a bit of a comeback these past few years —both the Ioniq 5 and Kona made our list of the best EVs of 2022.

The Elantra is a rock-solid sedan. It may not win style points and there’s an argument that the interior materials could feel more premium, but the Elantra knows its niche. It’s a value car at a great price point, and when shown in that light, it shines. Fantastic fuel efficiency, smooth driving, and a slew of safety and infotainment features help elevate the Elantra over its competitors.

Why Should I Buy… a Hyundai Elantra?

  • Safety and infotainment features. Many cars at the Elantra’s price-point compromise on one or the other (and sometimes both). Not the Elantra. From lane-departure and forward-collision warning, to blind-spot monitoring, to all the connectivity options you’d want from a modern car, the Elantra’s got a lot to offer.
  • Fuel efficiency. Car and Driver reported that 2020 Elantra trims got between 40-43 miles per gallon in fuel-economy tests. That kind of efficiency makes it a great commuter car for anyone in the market.
  • A deceptively smooth ride. The Elantra may not have the get-up-and-go of something more powerful or expensive, but it works with the 2.0 liter and V4 it does have surprisingly well. Combine that with good turning and braking, and you’ve got a car with a driving experience that punches above its price point.

Ford Fusion: Versatile, Affordable… What’s Not to Love?

A five-seat mid-size sedan, the Ford Fusion was discontinued in 2020 when Ford announced plans to end sedan production in the U.S. Despite that, the Fusion comfortably rolled into Carvana’s annual best sellers. With prices generally lower than at release and versatility that’s hard to beat, it’s easy to see why.

The Fusion’s agile handling and reliable – if not sports-car competitive – engine and transmission make for a smooth ride. Factor in a slew of options, like multiple powertrains, interior materials, and safety features, and you’ve got a versatile everyday driver.

Why Should I Buy… a Ford Fusion?

  • Options, options, options. Multiple different levels of infotainment and interior options make the Fusion as premium or serviceable as you want – and with a price point to match. There aren’t many sedans that can double as a starter car and something to budget for.
  • Safety. The 2020 Fusion scored a five-star crash-test safety rating with the NHTSA, featuring automated emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control.
  • Hybrid options. The option to choose between an all-gas or hybrid powertrain offers something to consumers looking for an affordable sedan that’s both fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly.

Jeep Cherokee: An SUV for on & off the Road

Oh look, another compact SUV! The Jeep Cherokee is perhaps an unexpected addition to our top-sellers list. At least, until you take a more discerning look under the hood. With real off-roading capability (at least, on some trims) and great handling, the Cherokee is a fantastic option for anyone who wants a car that can serve both family and fun.

While it won’t be winning any fuel efficiency rewards, the Cherokee sports a lot of variety between trims. Just take a look at the Trailhawk, which comes equipped with a 3.2-liter V6 and a 4,500-pound max towing capacity. A responsive driving experience, comfortable interior, and great features just sweeten the deal.

Why Should I Buy… a Jeep Cherokee?

  • Speed and agility. Most people looking for compact SUVs want something that’ll perform well as a family car. While you do give up some fuel efficiency with the Cherokee, the fun factor it provides via its speed and handling makes it hard to match.
  • Infotainment and interior. Jeep’s infotainment systems have long been considered top-notch, and the Cherokee complements premium connectivity and quality-of-life features with a plush interior.

Finishing off Carvana’s Best Sellers, the Volkswagen Jetta: Safe in Style

We figured we’d round out Carvana’s annual best sellers with something that sums up the themes thusfar. That’s right, it’s another affordable, reliable sedan. What a shocker. Faux surprise aside, the Jetta’s smooth handling, cargo capacity, hybrid fuel options, and affordable price point all make it a well-earned addition to this list.

While some Jetta trims lack the features you may expect from newer cars, the more mid-priced trims, like the R-Line, are full-featured and still priced competitively. Top-of-the-line safety and interior features round out a great daily driver.

Why Should I Buy… a Volkswagen Jetta?

  • VW-standard safety. Volkswagen has invested a lot in their safety systems, and it shows. High beams, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, forward-collision warning, and automated emergency braking systems are all available to Jetta drivers (although adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist are reserved for top trims). Add in a five-star crash-test safety rating from the NHTSA and you’ve got yourself a safe-as-can-be ride.
  • Fuel efficiency. Jettas regularly exceed fuel-economy expectations, offering 43 mpg and 48 mpg for the automatic and manual transmissions, respectively, in a test by Car and Driver.
  • A stylish, full-featured interior. While some may argue the Jetta chassis could be more appealing, the interior comes off as surprisingly high-tech and premium given the car’s affordability. It also has great cargo space, allowing it to comfortably double as a single driver’s daily driver or a family car.
